Award-winning Coach Tom Hofman and his staff have built the Valley's most popular youth basketball camp at La Cañada High School. Three one-week sessions this June.
About the Camp
Are you looking for a great activity once it's time to put the schoolbooks away? Play basketball in an atmosphere where you can't help but improve. Former members from Coach Tom Hofman's 31-time Rio Hondo League champion Spartans, along with a select group of college players, will be among the counselors.
This is far and away the most popular youth basketball camp in the entire Valley. Nearly 300 boys and girls attended last summer! Players acquire new skills, refine skills previously learned, build self-esteem, have fun, and go home with a smile!
Each afternoon for five days, you will be drilled on correct techniques of ball handling, shooting, passing, offense, defense and more. Our goal is to provide our campers with instruction that can be used all year long.
League play takes place during the final hour each day during which you will apply the new skills you have learned throughout the day. Your team coach for the games will evaluate your skills after each game, giving immediate feedback. SPARTAN BASKETBALL CAMP maintains a camper-to-coach ratio of approximately 8-to-1, providing more individual teaching than most of the larger basketball camps.
A final evaluation will be conducted on Friday, at which time your coach will assess your strengths and weaknesses, which will help guide players as to what they should concentrate on during the off-season. The week's final games will be played and trophies will be presented to each player at the Awards Ceremony. Every player receives a trophy.
Founded in 1988 to help youngsters become better basketball players by stressing fundamentals, something which is often overlooked. Campers learn individual offensive skills and team strategy concepts, as well as build self-esteem while they have fun!
The camp is open to youths between the ages of 6 and 14, with 8th grade graduates being the oldest at camp. Our camps are coed — girls are welcome! Enrollment is strictly first-come, first-served. Last year, all but one session sold out.
Camp Details
Three sessions this summer. The first is from Monday, June 8 through Friday, June 12. The second one-week session is June 15–19, and the third session is June 22–26.
Camp is held from 1:15 – 5:00 PM each afternoon in the air-conditioned La Cañada High School gymnasium at 4463 Oak Grove Drive.
Family and friends are encouraged to attend the final games and Awards Ceremony on the final day of camp (either June 12, June 19, or June 26 depending on the session). The first games begin at approximately 3:00 PM with ceremonies immediately following.
Each camper receives an attractive trophy at the ceremony.
In addition to the individual trophy every player receives at the Awards Ceremony, players also compete for additional trophies in special competitions each afternoon:
Wear a T-shirt and shorts. Bring water or money for the school's vending machine.
Do NOT bring watches, baseball caps, or your own basketball.
Each camper receives a Spartan Basketball Camp T-Shirt (wear it each day), a detailed evaluation sheet, and a trophy.
Parents have told us that our individual instruction is better than the high-priced camps which feature NBA superstars. Sign-ups and payments are currently being accepted online for the camp fee of $400, which includes a tee shirt, a new basketball, and a trophy. Our fee for a 20-hour week is comparable to what a sitter would charge, except the children do far more than sit on the couch and watch television. Our camp participants will be exercising and becoming physically fit while enjoying themselves under the watchful guidance of experienced camp counselors.

In elementary school and just starting out? Summer basketball camp is the ideal place to begin. We'll get you off to the proper start by teaching you the correct way to execute the fundamentals — techniques that will literally last a lifetime!
Already somewhat experienced and enjoyed playing basketball in your school's PE class? We will help make you a better player. Improve your game, refine your skills, and become a more consistent and dominant player in middle school.
Already competitive in a youth league and aiming for high school ball and beyond? We'll refine your skills and teach intricacies of the game not usually taught before high school — giving you an edge as you gear up for championship-level play.

Camp Director
Tom Hofman, La Cañada High School's varsity basketball coach and the camp's director, has turned the Spartans into a Southern California basketball power. This includes two CIF championships in the school's 61-year history in 1992 and 2011, and an outstanding 856–289 won-lost record at LCHS, making him one of the winningest coaches of any high school or college coach in California.
He has been selected "Coach of the Year" ten times by the Rio Hondo League, three times by the Glendale News Press, five times by the L.A. Times, twice by the Pasadena Star News, and was four-time Coach of the Year of the CIF Southern Section Div. III. In 2007 he was named Div. III State Coach of the Year.
